Description

A superior selection of our North American native species, Spigelia marilandica 'Ragin Cajun,' commonly called Indian Pink, is vegetatively propagated to ensure uniformity. It forms a more dense rounded mound of 4-inch long, wedge-shaped, glossy green leaves from which rise sturdy stems topped with one-sided cemes of upward-facing, tubular, brilliant orange-red flowers with yellow interiors. The trumpet-shaped flowers are flared at the top with 5 pointed lobes that form a yellow star. In our gardens, we've noticed that it blooms heavier and longer than other varieties: from late spring through mid-summer. The flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds and are excellent for cutting and display in fresh floral arrangements. Versatile and easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained to wet soil of average to high fertility and full sun to part shade, Ragin Cajun grows to about 24 inches tall and wide, making it a fine accent in smaller garden spaces or containers or groupings where space allows.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Ragin Cajun Spigelia is the perfect addition to a sunny to partially shaded hummingbird or nectar garden or perennial or woodland border mixed with other hummingbird-attracting plants such as Salvia, Hardy Lantana, and Butterfly Bush. Since it prefers consistently moist soil, it is ideal for planting along stream banks and around other bodies of water. Its smaller size and dense form make it perfect for pots, planters, and other containers, which is nice for those of you north of USDA Zone 5b who can overwinter it indoors or in a greenhouse. A fine addition to hummingbird gardens, native plant gardens, red theme gardens, cut flower gardens, and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  18 inches apart for solid groupings or borders; 42 inches or more for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Ragin Cajun Spigelia is very easy to grow. It's not too picky about soil type but prefers moist but well-drained soil. It will grow in wet soil but doesn't like standing water. It grows more dense and flowers more in full to mostly sun; however, it will tolerate a fair amount of shade or filtered sun. We suggest at least 4 hours or more of direct sunlight for best flowering.
