Description

A year round color factory, the Rainbow Leucothoe is one of the most dependable and colorful evergreen broadleaf shrubs for the shade garden. In spring, beautiful new leaves are a wonderful mix of pinks, cream, and bronze while the mature foliage below is deep green with white variegation. The leaves turn shades of bronze, burgundy, and red in winter. Drooping elongated clusters of small bell shaped white flowers appear in spring along the gracefully arching branches.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a mound to 4 feet tall and 5 feet wide, the Rainbow Leucothoe is useful in the landscape as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in shady to partly shady areas of the garden. A fine addition to woodland gardens and borders and looks especially nice around boulders and garden ponds.

Suggested Spacing:  4 feet apart for solid hedges;  6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Leucothoe is not winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

Rainbow Leucothoe is very easy to grow in organically rich, moist but well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. For best appearance and performance we recommend some shade in the afternoon. Maintenance is minimal except for a snipping here or there of a stray branch. That said, plants can be clipped to control height or to maintain as a hedge.
