Description
All of our Clematis vines are trellised 2-year-old plants in a 1-gallon pot.
A first-rate reblooming Clematis, Ravel is extremely free-flowering. From late spring and reblooming to early fall, it features abundant, large flowers with wavy-edged petals in shades of purple-blue surrounding a prominent cluster of wonderfully contrasting wine-red stamens at the center. When the flowers first open, there's a red bar at the center of the petals. It grows equally well in garden beds as in containers, where it can be grown on a short obelisk or trellis or as a spreader or spiller plant. Make sure to plant this beauty on or around patios where its beautiful flowers can be enjoyed through the season from up close.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Climbing 3 to 4 feet in height with a spread of 2 to 3 feet or more, Ravel Clematis can be grown as a climber or spreader. It is ideal for growing on a trellis or obelisk in small garden spaces or containers on or around patios and other outdoor sitting spaces where the flowers can be enjoyed up close. It is also great for meandering through shrubs and other plants. It is a fine addition to Clematis gardens, purple theme gardens, cut flower gardens, and butterfly and hummingbird gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 2-3 feet apart to cover short fences or trellises or as a groundcover
Growing Preferences
The Ravel Clematis is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil with average fertility and full sun to partial shade. For best flowering and overall performance, we suggest a minimum of 4 hours of direct sunlight daily. Though it tolerates dry periods when established, it will appreciate occasional supplemental water during prolonged periods of dry weather. See the pruning instructions just below.
Clematis Pruning Group 3
Clematis in group 3 consists of late-flowering species that bloom from summer into fall. This group flowers on the last 2 to 3 feet of the current season's growth (new wood). They are easy to prune because you do not need to maintain any old wood. In February or March, cut each stem to a height of 6 inches to 1 foot. Always leave two good buds below where you make your cut. New growth will emerge from these buds to produce the current season's vines and blooms.
