Description
Ratibida columnifera 'Red Midget,' commonly known as Mexican Hat Coneflower, is a North American native flowering perennial like no other. From midsummer through early fall, it features unique and abundant coneflowers with a prominent, tall, mint-green cone surrounded by a skirt of drooping petals in shades of dark red and/or orange-red edged in yellow. The butterflies and other beneficial pollinators will flock to flowers, which are also excellent for cutting and displaying in floral arrangements. If you're growing it in a natural area such as a meadow, prairie, or wildflower garden, leave some spent flowers on the plant in the late season to provide seeds for birds and self-sowing. Red Midget Mexican Hate is easy to grow and highly drought-tolerant when established, and the deer and rabbits turn their noses up at it.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing up to 3 feet tall in bloom and around 2 to 3 feet wide, Red Midget Mexican Hat is a native wildflower ideal for growing in naturalized areas, wildflower meadows, prairies, cottage gardens, native plant gardens, and sunny woodland borders. If spent flowers are left on plants it will freely self-sow.
Suggested Spacing: 24 to 36 inches apart for mass plantings
Growing Preferences
The Red Midget Mexican Hat Coneflower is easy to grow in moist,well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to mostly sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sun daily for best flowering and overall performance. It has high drought tolerance when established. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage additional bloom and/or prevent unwanted self-seeding. Self-sowing is a desirable thing when growing it in meadows and wildflower gardens.
