Description

A wonderful selection of our native Leucothoe axillaris, 'Squzam', what we call Red Tip Coastal Leucothoe, forms a spreading mound to 3 to 4 feet tall and maybe a little wider with arching stems clothed in lush, thick, dark green elongated leaves that turn to a vivid-burgundy-red in winter, which really puts on a show when there's snow on the ground. In April to May, abundant clusters of fragrant, bell-shaped white flowers are borne in the axils of the leaves, hence "axillaris" in the scientific name. An excellent evergreen companion to other shade to part shade loving plants such as Aucuba, Mahonia, Rhododendron and Illiciums (Anise), along with shade loving perennial ferns, Hosta and Heuchera.

The genus name Leucothoe comes from Greek mythology, being one of the maidens loved by Apollo. The species name axillaris comes from the fact that the flowers emerge from the leaf axils.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in an arching mound 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, Coastal Leucothoe is deal for use as an accent or in groupings in partly shaded landscape or woodland borders. A fine addition to woodland gardens and looks especially nice around boulders and garden ponds.

Suggested Spacing:  3.5 to 4 feet apart  for solid groupings or hedges;  8 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Coastal Leucothoe is very easy to grow in organically rich, moist but well-drained soils and deep shade to part shade. Morning and evening sun is okay but provide shade during the afternoon hours. Maintenance is minimal except for a snipping here or there of a stray branch.
