Description

Discovered in Czechoslovakia in 1973, Picea abies 'Rubra Spicata', commonly known as the Red Tipped Norway Spruce, is a very unique and attractive upright pyramidal evergreen conifer featuring stunning deep red new growth early in the season that will always have you looking forward to spring. An artistic open tree with upswept branches and pendulous branchlets, though it is slower growing than the species this elegant beauty might reach 25 feet high by 15 feet wide at the base here in the United States.

Landscape & Garden Uses

The Red Tipped Norway Spruce is ideal for use as an accent tree in rock or conifer gardens, to accentuate an entryway, to frame outside corners in tall home foundation plantings, or anywhere you want an outstanding evergreen tree that draws the eye and grabs attention. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, red theme gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  Best as a specimen

Growing Preferences

The Red Tipped Norway Spruce is easy to grow in a damp to moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic; leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. It grows best in full sun however in Zones 7b and 8a in the south it will prefer some shade or filtered sun during the middle of the afternoon. Once established water needs are lower when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water.
