Description

A year round color factory, the 'Rejoyce' Lecouthoe is a beauty of a plant discovered and brought to the plant world by Greg Joyce, long-time nurseryman in southern New Jersey. The color show begins in spring when new leaves burst forth in a blaze of red over a gracefully arching but dense mound of evergreen foliage. Short clusters of white, urn-shaped flowers similar in appearance to those of Pieris form at the ends of gently arching branches. During summer the foliage becomes a handsome rich green. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall the leaves turn to a deep wine-red, holding through winter. Rejoyce adds elegance to any partially shaded to shady setting, whether it be a container, garden bed or woodland border, where it combines beautifully with perennial ferns, hosta lilies, woodland grasses and many other natural-looking shade-loving plants and trees. You might be happy to know the deer turn their nose up to this one and we've seen no problems with leaf spots provided the soil in the planting area is well drained.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a mound to 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, the Rejoyce Coast Leucothoe is ideal for use as an accent plant in small gardens spaces and container gardens or in groupings where space allows in landscape and woodland borders. Excellent in partially shaded to shady home foundation plantings, under large trees and along a path. A fine addition to woodland gardens and borders and looks especially nice around boulders and garden ponds.

Suggested Spacing:  3 feet apart for solid hedges;  6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Rejoyce Coast Leucothoe is very easy to grow in organically rich, moist but well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. For best appearance and performance we suggest some shade or dappled shade in the afternoon. Maintenance is minimal except for a snipping here or there of a stray branch. That said, plants can be clipped to control height or to maintain as a hedge.
