Description
According to the breeder, among Hydrangea macrophylla, commonly known as mophead hydrangeas, Rock N Roll Hydrangea takes cold hardiness to the next level. While most mopheads are hardy to -20F, the stems and buds of Rock N Roll withstand temperatures down to -30F. Ready to take the stage in both cold and hot climates from Zone 4a-8b, this strong performer features abundant large flowers clusters in late spring to early summer followed by an encore rebloom in late summer to early fall. You can choose the flower color. Acid soils create dreamy blue flowers while neutral soils create purple and alkaline soils bright pink. The sturdy stems ensure no flopping or drooping on stage, which makes them perfect for excellent fresh or dried cut flowers. A low maintenance star performer sure to put on a spectacular show that will always have you looking forward to the summer flower concert season in the garden.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing naturally in a rounded mound 4 to 5 feet tall and wide, the Rock N Roll Hydrangea is ideal for use as a specimen accent in smaller garden spaces and home foundation plantings or in groupings or as a colorful natural hedge in partially shaded landscape, flowering shrub and woodland borders. Also nice in large containers of 18 inches or more in diameter. A fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, cut flower gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3.5 to 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 7 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Rock N Roll Hydrangea is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade in northern zones and part shade (morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun) in southern zones. For best flowering, we suggest 4 hours or more of direct sun light per day. As with so many other ornamental plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic. Flower color is your choice. Acidic soils will make blue flowers while a neutral to slightly alkaline soil will make pink flowers.
Note: Rock N Roll is a Hydrangea macrophylla species that produces its first round of summer flowers from buds that formed on "old wood" (during the previous year). This means that even though it is tempting to cut them back in the winter, when they are only bare sticks jutting out of the ground, don't do it. The flower buds are already formed and hidden in those bare sticks, so don't cut them off if you want flowers. Prune as you would an Endless Summer Hydrangea.
