Description

One of the showiest and easy-to-grow summer flowering shrubs for shady areas, the White Bottlebrush Buckeye is a North American native shrub that forms a large mound of bold foliage and an abundance of long, bottlebrush-like panicles of eye-catching tubular white flowers. 'Rogers' is the only known cultivar of Aesculus parviflora var. serotina. It was discovered by Joseph C. McDaniel (Professor of horticulture at the University of Illinois) growing in Urbana, Illinois in the early 1960s. In comparison to var. serotina, 'Rogers' blooms later and has more abundant flowers. While the flower spikes of the species are erect, those of 'Rogers' tend to gracefully droop because of their long length. The summer bloom is truly spectacular! The handsome deep green palmate leaves turn a pleasing yellow in fall. An excellent addition to the shade or woodland garden and shady flowering shrub borders.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 10 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide, the Bottlebrush Buckeye is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings or mass plantings in shady flowering shrub and woodland borders. A fine addition to North American native plant gardens, shade gardens, woodland gardens and white theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  8 to 10 feet apart for solid borders; 18 feet apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Roger's Bottlebrush Buckeye is very easy to grow and virtually maintenance free when planted right and in the right spot. It grows well in most any consistently moist but well drained soil of average to high fertility and shade or part shade. Morning sun is okay but prefers shade or dappled shade in the afternoon. Young plants prefer consistently moist soil. Mature plants will tolerate short dry periods.
