Description

Discovered as a chance seedling on Schoodic Peninsula in the state of Main, Pinus banksiana 'Schoodic', is a wonderful ground hugging form of our North American native Jack Pine. A slow grower it spreads to form a highly attractive mounding patch of twisting and turning branches clothed in short, emerald green needles. It grows to about a foot or so tall mounding in the center to maybe 2 feet, and spreads 6 to 8 feet wide over time. Though it typically stays prostrate, the artful gardener with some patience can train it to a stake to form an upright cascading mound surrounded by a skirt of foliage. Excellent for draping over a wall or boulder or spreading down an embankment or slop, Schoodic is easy to grow in full sun and and a well draining soil and can take the heat and cold, thriving in Zone 2 where winter low temperatures can drop to -50F.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 1 to 2 feet tall and spreading 6 to 8 feet wide, the Schoodic Jack Pine is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny landscape borders or on hillsides, embankments or slopes. Excellent for draping over walls or boulders. A fine selection for conifer gardens, native gardens, Asian gardens and rock gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  4 feet apart for a solid grouping or groundcover; 10 feet apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The Schoodic Jack Pine is easy to grow in a damp to moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or waterlogged soils can be problematic; leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. It grows best in full to mostly sun. Once established, water needs are quite low when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water. No pruning is necessary.
