Description
A must-have plant for cut flower gardens, Limonium latifolium, commonly known as Sea Lavender or Statice, is a hardy perennial featuring large, airy sprays of tiny, lavender-blue flowers on branched flower stems that add beauty and texture in the garden and are exceptionally long-lasting in floral arrangements. The flowers of Sea Lavender have always been a top choice for floral designers, who use them fresh or dried, and the butterflies and beneficial pollinators love them too. Even the dried flowers hold their color for a very long time. A tough but beautiful plant, it stands up to drought, cold (-40F), and heat, and is a fine addition to sunny garden beds or container gardens, as a stand-alone or mixed with other sun-loving plants.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 24 to 30 inches tall and equally as wide in flower, Sea Lavender is a beautiful accent in small garden spaces or in groupings where space allows. It is also excellent as a stand-alone or mixed with other sun-loving perennials in pots, planters, and other containers. It is a fine addition to cut flower gardens, butterfly gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, rock gardens, cottage gardens, purple theme gardens, and xeric gardens (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 18 inches apart for mass plantings; 42 inches or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Sea Lavender is easy to grow in most well-drained soils of average fertility and is drought tolerant when established. That said, for best results, it prefers damp to moist soil when setting up flower buds and blooming. It does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil. It prefers full sun but will tolerate some shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best overall performance. We've seen no serious problems with insects or disease. Flower stems can be cut back after flowering.
