Description
Discovered as a chance seedling by the folks at Sester Farms in Oregon, the Sester Dwarf Blue Colorado Spruce features stunning silvery blue needles year round on a dense, distinctively pyramidal form to only 8 to 10 feet tall and 5 feet wide at its base when all grown up. Its smaller stature makes it a perfect fit for smaller garden spaces or as an accent in home foundation plantings, where it can be the quintessential outdoor Christmas tree! It's a slow grower that adds maybe 4 to 6 inches in height per year so is also perfect for containers that can be situated on or around patios and other outdoor living spaces or to accentuate an entrance. An absolutely beautiful and extremely low-maintenance conifer, give this one plenty of sun and well drained soil, and don't worry about cold temperatures as it can handle -50F and snow loads with no problems.
Note: Though somewhat a rounded pyramid when young, don't worry as Sester Dwarf forms an almost perfect pyramid in time.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a dense pyramid 8 to 10 feet tall and around 5 feet wide at its base, the Sester Dwarf Blue Colorado Spruce ideal for use as a specimen in sunny, small to medium size landscape or garden spaces. Also excellent as a colorful and textural accent in home foundation plantings and in containers for situation on or around sunny patios and other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, blue theme gardens, formal gardens, native gardens and Asian theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 8 feet apart for spaced groupings or rows
Growing Preferences
The Sester Dwarf Blue Colorado Spruce is easy to grow in a damp to moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic; leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. It grows best in full to mostly sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for best spring foliage color. Once established water needs are lower when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water. Except to snip a stray stem there is no need for pruning.
