Description

Winner of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, 'Silver Dollar' is an impressive dwarf Pee Gee with amazing flower power. Unlike some other varieties, this one has very strong stems that do a splendid job of holding up the huge and abundant flower clusters over a long bloom season from summer through fall. The flowers almost completely cover the bush, emerging a bright lime-green that changes to white and finally a stunning pink in the fall. The flowers are great for cutting and use in fresh or dried floral arrangements. Putting on a spectacular summer to fall show, Silver Dollar has all the appeal of the larger growers like Limelight but at half the size.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing  4 to 5 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, the Silver Dollar Hydrangea makes an impressive specimen in small garden spaces or colorful groupings and hedges in larger spaces. Also a nice addition to mixed flowering shrub borders, as an accent in home foundation plantings or  perennial gardens, and in medium to large containers

Spacing:  4 to 5 feet' for solid hedges; 10 feet or more for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Silver Dollar Hydrangea is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. In the South it grows best in a location where it will receive some shade or filtered sun during the hottest part of the afternoon. For best flowering provide at least 6 hours of sun a day. Note:  Silver Dollar is a Hydrangea paniculata species that produces its flowers from buds that are formed on "new wood" (the current season's growth). This means you don't want to prune them in late spring or summer when they're preparing to bloom.
