Description
As its name suggests, the Silver Frost Butterfly Bush features silvery, frosty colors. It forms a rounded mound of light gray-green foliage 5 to 6 feet tall and wide from which rise sturdy stems bearing clustered spikes packed with fragrant, snow-white flowers with cute golden eyes. The flower spikes start coming in June and continue through summer well into fall, and are held more erect than on other butterfly bushes. Silver Frost is a fine accent, grouping, or hedge in sunny perennial gardens and landscape borders where the butterflies and hummingbirds will flock to feed on the nectar-rich flowers.
Note: Buddleia davidii 'Silver Frost' has been approved as a seedless butterfly bush cultivar and is considered sterile, producing fewer than 2% viable seeds, so it will not spread. It is approved for sale in all states without restriction.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide, the Silver Frost Butterfly Bush is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces, flowering shrub borders, and home foundation plantings, or in groupings or as a hedge in larger landscape borders. It is a fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, white theme gardens, fragrance gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 to 5 feet apart for solid hedges; 10' or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Silver Frost Butterfly Bush thrives in full to mostly sun and isn't too picky about soil type, provided the soil is well-drained. Plants are quite drought tolerant when established and deer don't like them. Though pruning is not necessary, deadheading spent flowers will encourage heavier rebloom. We usually cut our butterfly bushes back by 2/3 of their height in late winter to early spring, though doing so is not necessary.
