Description

A trouble-free and easy-to-grow shade lover, ‘Sinonome’ is a hybrid Toad Lily cultivar that grows in a vased-shape clump to about 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide. In optimum growing conditions, it will can spread by underground rhizomes to form a colony. It features upright stems that arch gracefully near the top. Exotic-looking creamy white, lily-like flowers each have six showy tepals with generous burgundy-purple spots and blotches. The abundant flowers appear in clusters in the upper leaf axils and stem tips from late summer through early fall. Due to its long stems, Sinonome is a popular selection of the cut flower industry in Japan for years. Ovate, rich green leaves 4 inches long are attractive as well in the garden. A very beautiful perennial for USDA Zones 5-8, plant this one in the ground or containers and situate in part shade to full shade avoiding direct afternoon sun. Really nice around patios and other outdoor sitting spaces where the exotic flowers and the late-season butterflies and hummingbirds feeding can be enjoyed from close up.

In case you were wondering where the name "toad lily" came from, the name refers to flowers being spotted like toads and having warty, sac-like bumps which are the nectaries.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in an upright vase-shaped clump up to 3 feet tall and spreading equally as wide, the Sinonome Toad Lily is ideal for use as a an accent specimen in small garden spaces and containers or in groupings where space allows. Perfect in consistently moist but well-drained soils near garden ponds or other water features. Plant near patios and other outdoor sitting areas where the exotic flowers can be viewed and enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to butterfly gardens, cut flower gardens, container gardens, cottage gardens, perennial gardens and shade and woodland gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  18 to 24 inches apart for groupings; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Sinonome Toad Lily is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full shade or part shade. Avoid direct afternoon sun which can scald leaves. It prefers a consistently moist, humusy, organically rich soil. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water if you see the foliage begin to wilt. Feed in spring and again in early summer with a natural or organic plant food such as Espoma Plant-Tone.
