Description

Among the tallest of the catmints, 'Six Hills Giant' is also prized as one of the hardiest (-30F) and most floriferous. Beginning in early summer, the billowing mound of aromatic, lemon-scented, soft grey-green foliage is topped with 8 to 10-inch spikes of very pretty, violet blue flowers that keep coming throughout the summer. Borne atop stems up to 36 inches tall, the flowers are a favorite of butterflies, hummingbirds and beneficial pollinators. A very easy to grow and low maintenance plant that is deer and rabbit resistant and will handle more moisture in the soil than other Nepeta varieties, Six Hills Giant is an eye-catching plant in beds and borders, rock gardens and cottage gardens.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing up to 3 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, Six Hills Giant Catmint is ideal for use as an accent plant in smaller garden spaces or containers, or in groupings or drifts or as a border in garden beds and landscape borders. Plant it near patios, decks, porches and other outdoor living areas where the fragrance and the pretty blue flowers, and the butterflies and hummingbirds they attract, can be enjoyed from close up. A natural choice for herb and perennial gardens and a fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, coastal gardens, fragrance gardens, blue theme gardens, cottage gardens, and rock gardens.

Growing Preferences

Six Hills Giant Catmint is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight for flowering. In areas with hot summers, this one will appreciate some shade or filtered sun during the midafternoon hours. This Nepeta will tolerate a more moist soil than others. It will tolerate short dry periods, but prefers a moist, not soggy or wet, soil.
