Description
Appropriately named, the 'Solar Flare' Baptisia is a perennial that acts like a shrub featuring up to 100 vertical flower spikes on a single mature plant! It's a fast growing variety with extra-tall 18" flower towers coming in late spring to early summer each displaying very pretty lemon-yellow pea-like flowers that gradually age to a soft orange. Attractive dark seedpods follow the flowers. Kids love these pods because they rattle when shaken. Growing in an upright vase shape to maybe 4 feet tall and wide, Solar Flare is an excellent vertical accent in garden and the flowers spikes are ideal for cutting and use in fresh or dried flower arrangements. An exceptionally drought tolerant and long-lived North American native flowering perennial plant anyone can grow!
Landscape / Garden Uses
Growing to about 4 feet tall and equally as wide, Solar Flare Baptisia is ideal for use an accent or grouping in perennial and meadow gardens and even landscape borders where it acts and looks more like a deciduous shrub. Its upright growth habit serves well as a centerpiece or vertical accent in larger container gardens. A fine addition to butterfly gardens, pollinator gardens, cut flower gardens, yellow theme gardens, meadow gardens, cottage gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs gardens).
Growing Preferences
Solar Flare Baptisia is very easy to grow in most any moist to dry well-drained soil of low to average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 5 hours or more of sunlight for best flowering. Tolerates poor and dry soils when established. Very drought tolerant and long-lived. A constantly soggy or wet soil can cause root rot. Plants can be cut back near the ground in late winter before new growth begins to emerge.
