Description

A top performer at the Mt Cuba Center Trial Gardens, the 'Hot Coral' Coneflower is perhaps the most compact and floriferous variety in the Sombrero Poco Echinacea Series. Early to begin blooming, from late spring through late summer Hot Coral features a profusion of coneflowers in bright, rich shades of coral-orange to coral pink. The flowers are held above dense mounds of dark green lance-shaped leaves on sturdy stems that make them excellent for cutting and use in floral arrangements. Butterflies and hummingbirds will enjoy the flowers and birds the seeds. At about 16 inches tall and equally as wide, Hot Coral is a dramatic and colorful accent in sunny to partially shaded smaller garden spaces or containers or stunning in groupings or mass plantings where space allows. No hot and sunny garden would be complete without coneflowers, and Hot Coral aims to please both you and the butterflies and birds with its uniquely colored flowers!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 14 to 16 inches tall and equally as wide, the Sombrero Poco Hot Coral Coneflower is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and container gardens or in groupings or mass plantings in sunny to partially shaded perennial and woodland borders.  A fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, bird gardens, cut flower gardens, orange or pink theme gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  14 inches apart for mass planting; 24 inches or more apart for groupings

Growing Preferences

Coneflowers are very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility in full sun or part shade. Provide at least 5 hours of direct sun for best flowering. As with many other perennial plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. Heavy, dense clay soils should be amended with organic matter to improve drainage. No deadheading necessary though spent flowers can be removed if desired. Feed in spring with a good flower food or organic plant food.
