What you might not know is that the Long Leaf Southern Yellow Pine is one of the most attractive of the tall growing southern pines that is ideal for use as a stately specimen, in groupings are as a privacy screen. When spaced properly to allow sunlight to reach all around the tree, it will form a dense, soft textured beautiful canopy consisting of clusters of 16-inch long needles that droop gracefully downward. The straight trunk of this tree is covered in a blocky, textured bark that is brown with warm, orange overtones. The massive pine cones are 10 inches long and the seeds feed pheasant, turkey, quail and squirrels, who also use the tree branches for nesting. Long Leaf Pine is also a friend to the red-cockaded woodpecker, brown headed nuthatch, harmless indigo snake and gopher tortoise. Growing 60 to 100 feet tall and maybe half as wide, the Southern Yellow Long Leaf Pine is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a tall hedge or privacy screen in landscape borders. Also a fine addition to Asian theme and conifer gardens and is suitable for growing in large pots. 

Suggested Spacing:  10 to 15 feet apart for privacy screens; 40 or more feet apart for space between trees
