Description

'Splash' is a new, rare selection of Variegated Summer Daphne. Similar to 'Eternal Fragrance' in form and bloom season, Splash produces abundant clusters of light pink buds opening to white flowers that sparkle against evergreen dark green leaves edged in yellow. The flowers appear from mid or late spring through summer and into fall. It forms a rounded mound to about 3 feet tall and equally as wide so is a good fit as an accent in small gardens spaces or grouped where spaces allows in landscape borders and woodland gardens. While some gardeners in cool-summer climates, such as the Pacific Northwest, say it will tolerate full sun, we suggest filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours in hot-summer climates. Splash is excellent planted near windows, patios, decks, porches and other outdoor living spaces where the pretty flowers and wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed from close up.

Growing Preferences

Despite the remarkable variety of gardening myths about its requirements, Daphne is very hardy and easy to grow when planted right and in the right spot. Though we see a lot of websites saying this hybrid species (Daphne x transatlantica) will tolerate full sun we're not sure about that. Perhaps in cooler zones or cool-summer climates in zones 6 through 9 they will tolerate full sun? In our north-central Georgia gardens Daphne prefers some shade. Morning and evening sun is okay but we avoid a planting site that receives direct afternoon sun.

Daphne transatlantica grows best in rich, sandy-humusy, well-drained but moist soil with a neutral pH (6.5-7.5 pH). Good soil drainage is essential as they do not like constantly soggy soils, which can cause root rot. In heavy clay soil that doesn't drain well it's a good idea to plant in raised mound to ensure proper drainage. Daphne are drought tolerant when established however this summer bloomer prefers a consistently moist soil during the bloom season. Dry soil may reduce summer bloom.
