Description

'Spring Sonata' is a dwarf Indian Hawthorne that produces abundant clusters of white flowers against glossy green foliage in spring. The flowers come three weeks later than other Indian Hawthorne varieties, extending the bloom season. Attractive dark purple fruits enjoyed by birds follow the flowers and cover the plant in fall through spring, adding extra appeal to an already marvelous evergreen shrub. An excellent evergreen home foundation shrub or to plant in groupings or as a hedge in sunny landscape borders.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a mound 4 feet tall and 5 feet or so wide, Spring Sonata Indian Hawthorne is an ideal selection for use as an accent, in groupings, or as a low-maintenance hedge in home foundation plantings and landscape and flowering shrub borders. It also serves well as a colorful mass planting for erosion control on slopes and embankments. Can be grown in containers but likes growing in the ground better. A fine addition to bird gardens and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).

Spacing: 4' for solid hedge; 7' for space between plants

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Indian Hawthorne is not winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

Spring Sonata Indian Hawthorne is easy to grow in well-drained moist soils of average fertility in full sun to part shade. Morning sun is a must to dry dew from the leaves. As with so many other ornamental shrubs, constantly soggy or wet soils can cause root rot and other harmful plant diseases. When established Indian Hawthorne are exceptionally drought tolerant. That said, during prolonged periods of summer drought established plants will appreciate an occasional deep soaking. Does not require pruning to maintain its naturally dense form.
