Description
Discovered near Stowe Mountain in Vermont by Greg Williams of Kate Brook Nursery, 'Stowe Pillar' is a remarkably narrow and columnar form of our North American native Eastern White Pine. At 25 feet tall and only 5 to 6 feet wide when all grown up, it puts an exclamation point on a landscape that will not go unnoticed. Its towering, sturdy structure has dense, upward-reaching branches clothed in soft-textured clusters of long blue-green needles. Creamy-white candles (new growth) in spring contrast beautifully with the dark blue-green mature foliage. Excellent as a specimen, grouping, or in privacy screen plantings where space is limited. It is also lovely as an accent tree or to frame corners or entrances in home foundation plantings.
Wildlife Benefits
The Eastern White Pine supports the Imperial Moth and its seeds are a favorite of black bears, rabbits, red squirrels, and many bird species. The canopy serves as a shelter for many birds and small mammals.
Landscape & Garden Uses
At maturity, the Stowe Pillar Eastern White Pine grows 20 to 25 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide at its base. It is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, in privacy screen plantings, or along sunny to partially shaded woodland borders. It is also excellent as an accent tree or to frame entrances in home foundation plantings. It is a fine addition to native plant gardens, conifer gardens, and wildlife gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for privacy screen; 10 feet apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Stowe Pillar Eastern White Pine is easy to grow in moist, well-drained, acidic soil with average fertility and full sun to partial shade. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day. In USDA Zone 8 of the South, we suggest some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours when the sun is most intense. It prefers an acid soil ranging from 4.5 to 6.0 on the pH scale. Alkaline soils above 7.0 pH will result in yellowing foliage and poor health. Apply chelated iron or soil sulfur to acidify the soil. As with so many other ornamental trees, constantly soggy soil or wet can cause problems with the roots.
