Description

Like all other Monarda varieties in the Sugar Buzz Series, 'Grape Gumball' is a vigorous, compact, sturdy, and low-maintenance Monarda selection with magnificent flower form and color. In summer, its rounded, shaggy clusters of brilliant magenta-purple flowers clusters atop sturdy stems form a solid dome of eye-catching color on the 2-foot high and wide mound of attractive, dark green, mildew-resistant foliage. The hummingbirds, butterflies, and beneficial pollinators will flock to the nectar-rich flowers. An easy-to-grow North American native, Grape Gumball is an excellent choice for specimens or groupings in garden beds or containers.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in an upright clump to around 2 feet tall and 2 feet wide, the Grape Gumball Bee Balm is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers or in groupings in perennial borders or along paths, walkways or around patios and other outdoor living spaces where the pretty flowers and hummingbirds feeding can be enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to butterfly gardens, hummingbird and pollinator gardens, cut flower gardens, fragrance gardens, native gardens, purple theme gardens, herb gardens, and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  18" apart for mass plantings or groupings; 3.5 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Bee Balm is easy to grow in most consistently moist but well-drained humusy, fertile soil with full sun or partial shade. We suggest 4 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. Morning sun is suggested to dry dew from the leaves. Plant with the top of the root ball level with the ground. In full sun, mulch plants with an inch or so of straw or bark mulch to help retain soil moisture during summer. Feed as directed on the product label with a natural or organic plant food. Pruning is unnecessary; deadheading spent flowers will encourage heavier rebloom. Plants can be cut to the ground after going completely dormant in winter.
