Description

If you like the colors of fine wine you'll love love Summer Wine, an improved Physocaprus, commonly known as Ninebark. A super-tough, easy-care and fast-growing cross hybrid of our native species, Summer Wine features a mounding shrub to around 6 feet tall and wide with arching, cascading branches clothed in maple-like wine-purple leaves that turn to wine-red in fall. In late spring to early summer abundant domed clusters of contrasting pink-tinted white flowers appear that are followed by inflated burgundy-red seed heads. Layers of peeling red-brown bark on the branches and stems, hence the name "ninebark," take the stage during the winter months. A trouble-free and colorful beauty that deserves a spot in every landscape where it will grow. USDA Zones 3a-7b. Cold hardy to -40F!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a rounded arching mound 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, the Summer Wine Ninebark is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings or as a natural hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. Also makes a nice accent in home foundation plantings. A fine addition to native plant gardens, butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens, purple theme gardens, cottage gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  5 feet apart for solid hedges; 12 feet or more for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Summer Wine Ninebark is very easy to grow in a wide range of soils preferring a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. It is very drought tolerant when established and will grow in rocky soils. For the best foliage color we suggest full to mostly sun however plants will tolerate some light shade. If desired, prune for shaping purposes after flowering in spring. Similar to hydrangeas, every few years some of the oldest stems can be cut back to near the ground, which invigorates the bush by creating new fresh stems.
