Description
If you like pink, you'll love Summerific Evening Rose, a super hardy Hibiscus (Rose Mallow) that northern and southern gardeners can grow outdoors year-round. It withstands cold temperatures down to -30F as far north as USDA Zone 4a. A long-blooming perennial, from early or mid-summer through late summer, abundant, enormous 8-inch diameter flowers with brilliant hot-pink puckered petals pop against the dark, near-black lush foliage on cloud-shaped plants 4 feet tall and 4.5 to 5 wide. Not only will you enjoy this marvelous plant as a tropical flare in the garden, the butterflies and hummingbirds will appreciate it as well. Excellent near patios, decks, and other outdoor sitting areas and living spaces where the stunning flowers can be enjoyed from close up, but also stands out remarkably well from a distance.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 feet tall and 4.5 to 5 feet wide, the Summerific Evening Rose Hibiscus makes a bold and beautiful specimen in the landscape or large containers. It is especially impressive in groupings of three or as a colorful hedge where space allows. It makes a nice backdrop or centerpiece in flower gardens. It is a fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens and for adding a tropical flare around your outdoor living spaces.
Suggested Spacing: 3.5 to 4 feet apart for hedge; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Hardy Hibiscus are very easy to grow. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil and plenty of sunshine, though some shade is tolerated. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for best flower production and foliage color. Plants have moderate drought tolerance when established, but during prolonged periods of summer drought, they will appreciate supplemental water to bloom at their best. Maintenance is minimal, requiring just one pruning a year. When new growth emerges from the base in spring, you can cut back any old stems to near the ground.
