A fantastic cold-hardy cross hybrid of Alocasia 'Portora' and 'Purple Cloak,' the 'Sumo' Elephant Ear is a truly magnificent plant featuring enormous, thick leaves measuring up to 4 feet long and 2.5 feet across on a plant with a total height of 8 to 10 feet! Formed atop thick and sturdy dark green stems suffused in reddish-black, the skyward-reaching leaves are dark green on top and light bronze-green with contrasting purplish veins on their backside. Vigorous and easy to grow in the ground or containers and able to survive temperatures down to 5F when growing in the ground, this impressive giant will undoubtedly bring a look of the tropics to the garden that will stop onlookers in their tracks. Gardeners north of Zone 8 can grow Sumo in containers that can be overwintered indoors and moved back outside when temperatures warm in spring.

Sumo Giant Hardy Elephant Ear is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. We suggest 4 or more hours of direct sunlight per day. The more sun the larger the pant grows. It prefers a consistently moist to wet soil. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water if you see the foliage begin to wilt. Feed in spring and again in early summer with a slow-release flower food or natural or organic plant food. In Zone 7 we suggest some extra mulch around the plant for insulation in case the temperatures drop below normal.
