Description

A bright exclamation point in the garden, the Sunjoy Gold Pillar is an upright semi-columnar barberry with newly emerging leaves that are brilliant orange red in early spring maturing to a radiant bright yellow as the season progresses. Just before going dormant for the winter the leaves will turn back to vibrant orange-red. The bright yellow leaves provide an excellent contrast when combined with plants having dark green, burgundy, blue, or red foliage. Excellent drought tolerance when established makes Sunjoy Gold Pillar barberry a fine candidate for the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 4 feet tall and 1.5 to 2 feet wide, the Sunjoy Gold Pillar Barberry is useful as a colorful accent or specimen, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Great for those tight spaces where a narrow plant is needed. Its high heat and drought tolerance makes it an ideal choice for the Xeriscape (low water needs) garden.

Sunjoy Gold Pillar Barberry combines well with sedums, junipers, ornamental grasses, yucca, and other drought tolerant plants that thrive in sun and well-drained soil.

Spacing Recommendations:  1.5 feet apart for solid hedges, 4 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Barberry are exceptionally easy to grow when planted right and in the right spot. They prefer a well-drained soil and all the sun you can give them. Foliage color is more intense with more sun. As with so many other ornamental landscape shrubs, barberry does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil. We've seen no insect or disease problems. When established, plants are very drought tolerant, requiring supplemental irrigation only during prolonged periods of summer drought.
