Description
Introduced by Crispin's Creations Nursery, the Acer shirasawanum 'Sunny' is a recently introduced Full Moon Japanese Maple with some Acer palmatum parentage. Without having long-term experience with this new cultivar, we aren't sure about the average mature size. Still, we do know it's pretty vigorous, adding 12 to 15 inches per year in height and half that in width, which means 10 to 12 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide in 10 years and maybe 20 feet tall and 12 to 15 or more feet wide at maturity. Like other full moon maples, the canopy will likely become broader with age. Its large, palmate, glowing yellow leaves are fairly sunburn-resistant in mild or cool summer climates, but we suggest some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon in hot summer climates. With cooler temperatures in fall, the leaves turn to orange shades that might deepen in color to red. Easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility, Sunny Golden Full Moon Maple is destined to be a captivating specimen in landscape borders or containers.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Sunny Golden Full Moon Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, you can plant three in a grouping or two to frame an entrance.
Suggested Spacing: At least 20 feet apart for space between trees over the long term
Note: One Japanese maple can make a landscape if you don't overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when choosing companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, select low-growing shrubs or groundcovers that won't interfere at all with your tree.
Growing Preferences
Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are very tough and long-lived trees. They are very easy to grow in the ground or containers.
Japanese Maples are understory trees in their natural habitat, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. That said, in mild or cool summer climates Sunny will handle full to mostly sun quite well. In Hot summer climates, she'll appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon when the sunlight is most intense. Sun-tolerant Japanese Maple varieties.
Japanese Maples prefer moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
