Description
A unique Golden Hinoki Cypress discovered at Iseli Nursery in Oregon, the 'Sunny Swirl' certainly lives up to its name, displaying beautiful, eye-catching texture, form, and bright color in the landscape. It has stiff, contorted branches with mahogany-red bark that contrast beautifully with the thread-like foliage in varying shades of yellow-gold on the young growth and chartreuse shades towards the interior. Occasionally, the leaf tips come together to form unique-looking cockscombs. Easy to grow and long-lived, Sunny Swirl is undoubtedly a distinguished and dramatic accent in the landscape and a good fit for smaller garden spaces or containers, reaching maybe 5 to 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide at ten years of age and maybe twice that size at maturity.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing slowly in an irregular conical form to about 10 to 12 feet tall and 6 feet wide or so at maturity, the 'Sunny Swirl' Hinoki Cypress is ideal for use as an eye-catching focal point specimen in small garden spaces and home foundation plantings, and is effective in small groupings in larger spaces. It does very well in containers, provided there is good drainage. A fine addition to Asian themed gardens, conifer gardens, yellow theme gardens, and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Growing Preferences
The Sunny Swirl Hinoki Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic. Avoid overwatering. Provide only enough water to keep the soil damp to moist. Established plants are quite drought tolerant and will only require an occasional watering during prolonged periods of drought. Maintenance is minimal with no pruning required.
