Description

An easy-to-grow native flowering perennial plant, the Swamp Sunflower lights up the garden or meadow with a profusion of bright golden-yellow daisies in late summer and fall when color and flowers are needed most by butterflies and other beneficial pollinators and birds. Tall stems clothed in deep green narrow leaves grow up to 8 feet in height making this a great choice for the back of the perennial border or wildflower garden. Because it likes a moisture retentive soil it's looks right at home around ponds, streams and other bodies of water.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 5 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, the Swamp Sunflower is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings or as a background plant in perennial and wildflower or native plant gardens.  it thrives in a moist soil so is perfect for use around the edges of ponds, lakes and other bodies of water. A fine addition to bog gardens, perennial gardens, meadow gardens, native gardens, wildflower gardens,  and yellow theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  8 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Swamp Hibiscus are very easy to grow. They will tolerate dry periods but are most happy in consistently moist to "swampy'" soils. Though they will tolerate some light shade, they will bloom their best in full to mostly sun. Maintenance is minimal. Prune annually in spring just after new growth begins to emerge. At that time cut the plant back to just above the new growth.
