Description

Renowned by chef's worldwide for its delectable shoots, the shoots of the Sweet Shoot Bamboo are prized for their tasty, early season production. It is very popular in China where it is called Vegetable Bamboo. The tasty shoots are used in salads, soups, stews and stir-frys. But that's not all this species is prized for. Sweet Shoot is also prized for its attractive canes and foliage. Arching, soft green to blue-green culms with occasional white rings grow to 40 feet tall, even in the coldest zones where it will grow. Occasionally there are yellow stripes running up the culms. The 3-inch culms have large diameter for their height and develop thick canes without the incredible height of other Phyllostachys. It performs well and gets big canes in smaller and tighter spaces. The lush foliage consists of creamy white new leaves that age to olive green forming thick, drooping clusters. This one is cold hardy to -10 degrees F and can grow close to full height even with those temperatures. Sweet Shoot is a quick growing bamboo, making it a great choice for a screen, hedge or grove.

Sweet Shoot Bamboo grows well in most any average well-drained moist to dry soil and full sun to part shade. When established it is exceptionally heat, cold and drought tolerant.

How To Grow Bamboo Plants Indoors

Sweet Shoot is a running bamboo, which means it spreads. Bamboo can be controlled in a small area simply by stepping on or cutting down the young shoots. New shoots of this bamboo bamboo can also be used for culinary purposes and cooked, much like asparagus. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year and, when they are "shooting," the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. Root pruning or installing Bamboo Root Barrier are other methods to control spread.
