Description
This is the rare, single-trunk tree-form version of the Sweet Starlight Hydrangea, one of, if not the earliest, of all Hydrangea paniculata varieties to begin blooming during the season. The large and abundant flower clusters of 'Sweet Starlight' start showing up in June in our gardens. They open in a shade of light green, quickly changing to white. Then, as the season progresses, they gradually transition to pink by July and finally to a darker pink to almost red later in the season. The flower clusters are held atop strong stems that won't flop in the garden or when growing in containers, making them excellent for cutting and use in fresh or dried flower arrangements. A compact grower with denser branching, the canopy will reach about 4 feet high and wide atop the single trunk, clothed in lush, large, rich green leaves. The tree form Sweet Starlight Hydrangea makes for a fine accent in smaller garden spaces and home foundation plantings, in groupings, or use two to frame an entrance. It's smaller size also lends well to growing in containers that can be situated on or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to about 7 feet tall, including the canopy and trunk, and 4 feet wide, the Sweet Starlight Hydrangea Tree is ideal for use as a specimen in small garden spaces and home foundation plantings, or in groupings, or use two to frame an entrance. It is an excellent candidate for large pots, planters, and other containers and a fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, pink theme gardens, cut flower gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen, or use two to frame an entrance
Growing Preferences
The Sweet Starlight Hydrangea Tree is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade in northern USDA Zone 4-6 and filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours in southern Zone 7-8. Too much shade causes plants to become floppy and reduces their flowering. We suggest 5 hours or more of sunlight per day for the best overall performance.
Note: Sweet Starlight is a Hydrangea paniculata species that produces its flowers from buds that are formed on "new wood" (the current season's growth). This means you don't want to prune them in late spring or summer when they're preparing to bloom.
