Description

The original North American native Switch Grass, Panicum virgatum, commonly called Tall Switch Grass or Panic Grass, is a handsome tall prairie grass that is right at home in residential and commercial landscape all over the country. In summer, large pink-tinged flower spikes rise 2 to 3 feet above and hover over like a cloud over the columnar 4 foot clumps of arching blue-green grassy foliage. Inconspicuous flowers with burgundy anthers dangle from the well-branched panicles followed by shiny, tear drop shaped seeds that develop from single flowered spikelets that persist well into winter for birds to feed on. Foliage turns attractive shades of gold and orange in fall and finally to tan in winter. Exceptionally low maintenance and resistant to deer grazing, drought, erosion, occasional flooding and air pollution this is a beautiful native grass species anyone can grow, and the birds will thank you for planting it!

Wildlife Assets
Tall Switchgrass is a larval host plant for various Skipper butterflies and the Common Wood-Nymph butterfly. Songbirds and small mammals enjoy the seeds. Provides excellent cover year round for many wildlife species.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Tall Switch Grass provides fine texture and color in the landscape. Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and with flowers up to 7 feet, Tall Switch Grass is ideal for use as a vertical accent in smaller garden spaces or in groupings or as a hedge or background in landscape borders. Also effective in mass plantings on sunny slopes and embankments or as a background or centerpiece in perennial gardens, bird and wildlife gardens, native plant gardens, prairies, meadows or naturalized areas.

Suggested Spacing:  3 feet apart for mass plantings;  8 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

A North American native grass, Switch Grass are very easy to grow in a wide range of soils, even clay, sandy and rocky or dry soils, though they prefer a moist but well-drained soil. They don't like an organically rich soil so there's no need to add compost or humus to the native soil when planting. No need to fertilize this plant. Switch Grass grow, best in full sun but will tolerate some light shade. Too much shade and plants might become floppy. Maintenance is minimal. Cut clumps back to just above ground in late winter before new growth begins to emerge.
