Description
Recently introduced to the United States from Europe, Abies koreocarpa 'Tannja' is a hybrid cross between the Korean Fir (Abies koreana) and the Subalpine Fir (Abies lasiocarpa). It features highly ornamental, bright silver-blue foliage, making it a captivating gem in the landscape. Neither we nor anyone we know has had long-term experience with this cultivar, which makes it difficult to describe its habit, form, and size at maturity. We know it's a slow grower that adds an average of 4 to 6 inches to its size every year, forming a rounded pyramid 4 to 5 feet in height and 3 feet wide after 10 years. Therefore, we think it might become more upright and pyramidal with age, reaching 8 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide at its base in 20 years. Conifers don't like being moved, so choose the right spot for this eye-catching beauty, preferably one with well-drained but moist soil and five or more hours of sunlight daily.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide at maturity, the Tannja Hybrid Koren Fir is ideal for an eye-catching focal point specimen in small, sunny landscape borders or home foundation plantings. Two can frame an entrance or plant a grouping of three spaced eight or more feet apart. Its diminutive stature makes it suitable for containers on or around patios or other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens, blue gardens, Asian gardens, Zen gardens, and rock gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen, in small groupings spaced 8' apart, or use 2 to frame an entrance
Growing Preferences
The Tannja Hybrid Korean Fir is easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and at least 5 hours or more of direct sunlight daily. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So plant it in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or pots. Once established, it will tolerate short dry periods but might appreciate supplemental water to maintain moist soil during extended summer droughts. In pots, soil moisture must be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water.
