Description
Tar Baby is an extremely rare and unique Camellia featuring abundant, double anemone-form flowers with a single row of blood red petals surrounding a mounded cushion of red petaloids. The petals darken as they age. The gorgeous flowers appear in late winter and continue through early spring standing out beautifully against glossy, evergreen, dark green pointed leaves. Needless to say, the flowers are excellent for cutting and display in indoor flower arrangements. Eventually reaching 10 feet tall and equally as wide, Tar baby is excellent as a specimen, hedge or background, or as the plant grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree perfect for a focal point specimen in partially shaded borders or home foundation plantings.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 6equally as wide, the Tar Baby Camellia can be grown as a shrub or small tree. As a shrub, it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a hedge or background plant in partially shaded landscape borders. Itis especially nice as a corner plant or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. As this camellia grows, lower branches can be removed to form a small tree that serves well as an attractive and colorful focal point specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Also suitable for containers. A fine addition to camellia gardens, red theme gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and woodland borders.
Suggested Spacing: 6 to 7 feet apart for solid hedge; 14 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy or waterlogged soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellias grow and bloom better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.
