Description

A dwarf globose version of our native American Aborvitae, Tater Tot forms a cute little sphere of dense feathery foliage 2 to 3 feet tall and equally as wide. Its wispy, fan-like foliage sprays emerge a vibrant bright green in spring aging to a darker green by summer that holds its color well throughout winter with no bronzing. Tater Tot thrives in full sun but also does quite well in shade, which it actually prefers during the hot mid afternoon hours in Zone 8 hot-summer climates. Its smaller size and slow-growing nature lends well for use as an accent is smaller garden spaces and containers, or in groupings or as a hedge in larger spaces. It is perfect for where low evergreen shrubs are needed in home foundation plantings.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing only 2 to 3 feet tall and equally as wide over time, the Tater Tot Arborvitae is great for use as a specimen in small garden spaces and containers or in groupings or as a low natural hedge where space allows. Excellent in home foundation plantings. A fine addition to miniature gardens, formal gardens, conifer gardens, rock gardens and Asian theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 2 feet apart for solid hedge;  5 feet or more for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Tater Tot Arborvitae is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Maintenance is minimal with very little if any pruning ever required. A very light shearing in late winter can be done for shaping purposes.
