Description

If you like big and bold plants that provide major wow-factor in the landscape, look no further than the Thailand Giant Elephant Ear. This huge-growing strain reaches a height of 7 to 9 feet tall and equally as wide with blue-green leaves up to 5 feet long and 4 feet wide! What's more, from an early age the plant produces fragrant, large, lily-like white flowers to fill the garden with a pleasant perfume. Thailand Giant is a dependable outdoor perennial in USDA Zones 8 through 11, withstanding winter low temperatures of 15 degrees Fahrenheit. For gardeners north of Zone 8, you'll be happy to know that plants growing in containers can be overwintered indoors. It thrives in full sun to part shade, is super heat and humidity tolerant, and its roots prefer life on the moist side. That said, unlike some other varieties of elephant ears that will grow in a pot submerged in the garden pond, Thailand Giant does not like standing water. Sure to be a visual wonder and conversation-piece in the landscape!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 7 to 9 feet tall and equally as wide, the Thailand Giant Hardy Elephant Ear thrives in the garden and in containers. We suggest a pot of at least 20 inches in diameter. It can even be grown as a houseplant if you have the space to accommodate its size. In the garden, we suggest using it as a specimen however where space allows groupings are fine. A fine addition to tropical or tropical-look gardens, perennial gardens, and around water gardens and other bodies of water.

Suggested Spacing:  12+ feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Thailand Giant Hardy Elephant Ear can be grown in the ground or in containers. Either way, it prefers a moist but well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. We suggest 4 or more hours of direct sunlight per day. The more sun the larger the plant grows.

When growing in the ground it prefers a loose, well-draining, compost rich soil topped with about least 2 inches of organic mulch.

In containers, we suggest a pot of 16 inches or more in diameter, the larger the better, lined with a porous fabric such as a weed barrier cloth or landscape fabric, which will help to keep the drain holes from becomming stopped up by roots and soil media. Fill the pot with a premium potting mix that holds moisture evenly but drains well. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water as needed to maintain a consistently moist soil

NOTE: Unlike some other types of elephant ears that can tolerate standing water, Thailand Giant doesn't like it.

Feed in spring and again in early summer with a slow-release flower food or natural or organic plant food or composted organic matter.

In Zone 8 we suggest some extra mulch around the plant for insulation duriong winter in case the temperatures drop lower than normal.
