Description
An easy-to-grow and beautiful North American native flowering perennial that won the 2011 Perennial Plant Association's Plant of the Year Award, the Threadleaf Blue Star, Amsonia hubrichtii, provides three season interest in the garden. In spring, the needle-like deep green foliage has a soft, feathery appearance that is sure to attract attention. In spring to early summer, abundant clusters packed with pretty, star-shaped, sky-blue flowers crown plants at the top of every stem attracting both visual attention and the butterflies. But one of this plants most attractive features is the bright and rich golden-yellow fall foliage, which is something we always look forward to seeing in our gardens.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, Blue Star is excellent for naturalizing along sunny to partially shaded woodland borders, in wild flower gardens, or the periphery of stream of pond.
Suggested Spacing: 24 inches apart for groupings; 5 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Blue Star is very easy to grow in most any average, medium to wet, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Plants will grow taller in too much shade may tend to flop but can be cut back after flowering. Just wear gloves when pruning this plant because the milky sap in the stems can cause skin irritation on some people.
