Description
A more recent introduction bred by world-renowned Magnolia breeder Vance Hooper of Brixton, New Zealand, 'Tinker Belle,' sometimes spelled Tinkerbelle, is adored and prized for its breathtakingly beautiful blooms and flower power, vigorous growth, and smaller stature, which makes it a good fit where space is limited and in containers. From a young age, in early to mid-spring, and sometimes reblooming sporadically through the summer thereafter, Tinker Belle produces abundant, wonderfully fragrant, tulip-shaped blooms with petals that are a deep magenta on the outside and soft-pink inside. The flowers are excellent for cutting and display in a vase or floral arrangement. Tinker Belle assumes a more upright and narrow form maybe 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, clothed in lush, dark green foliage that stays handsome through the season.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With an upright habit and narrow form 10 to 14 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Tinkerbelle Magnolia is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or an accent tree home foundation plantings and around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It is also suitable for growing in pots, planters, and other containers with a top diameter of 18 inches or more. As it grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree. A fine addition to red theme gardens, fragrance gardens, cut flower gardens and cottage gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Tinkerbelle Magnolia is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained acidic soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It prefers full sun for best flowering; however, it will handle some partial shade. Some filtered sun or shade during the hottest mid-afternoon summer hours might be appreciated in the deep South. Avoid constantly soggy or wet soils. In alkaline soils, applying soil sulfur and/or chelated iron increases soil acidity. Pruning isn't usually necessary; however, stray branches can be pruned immediately after flowering in spring. Feed after flowering in spring with a mild organic plant food or a well-balanced shrub and tree food containing iron or sulfur.
