Description
A rare cultivar dating back to the late 1800s, the Tompa Norway Spruce (Picea abies 'Tompa') is a cute little coniferous evergreen with an unusual shape. Adding 3 to 4 inches in height per year, it has an upright form like the shape of a Hershey Kiss that might reach 4 to 5 feet tall by 3 feet wide at its base when all grown up. Its miniature spruce-like foliage is bright green in spring, maturing to dark green by summer. Tompa is an adorable accent in small garden spaces, rock gardens, and containers, or can be grouped or rowed. Two can be used to frame an entrance.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide, the Tompa Dwarf Norway Spruce is ideal for use as an accent specimen in smaller garden spaces, conifer gardens, rock gardens, and home foundation plantings. Two can frame an entrance, or three or more in groupings spaced four or more feet apart. It is also suitable for growing in pots, planters, and other containers.
Suggested Spacing: 4 or more feet apart in spaced groupings or rows
Growing Preferences
The Tompa Dwarf Norway Spruce is easy to grow in a damp, moist, well-drained soil of average fertility. As with many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So plant it in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or pots. It grows best in full sun; however, it will like some shade or filtered sun during the mid-afternoon in hot summer climates. Once established, water needs are pretty low when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture must be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water.
