Description
Farfugium japonicum var. giganteum, commonly called Tractor Seat Plant or Giant Leopard Plant, is a site to behold in the garden. Though its giant tractor seat-shaped leaves up to 15 inches across give it a look of the tropics, it's a hardy garden perennial where temperatures don't drop below 0F. Though some sources say it will grow in full to light sun, we've had the best success in our north-central Georgia gardens in partial shade. Morning and evening sun are fine, but afternoon sun causes the leaves to wilt and lose their dark green color. It forms an impressive clump up to 30 inches tall and 3 feet wide with sturdy flower stems rising to 4 feet that bear clusters of bright golden-yellow daisies from late summer through late fall. An excellent plant for garden beds or containers destined to be a conversation piece! You might be happy to know this one is both deer and rabbit-resistant.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 2.5' tall and 3 feet wide with flowers to 4 feet high, the Tractor Seat Plant is ideal for a bold and beautiful tropical-looking accent or grouping in shady to partially shaded garden beds and containers that can be situated on or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It is a fine addition to shade and woodland gardens, yellow theme gardens, Asian gardens, and tropical-look gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Tractor Seat Plant is easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil with average or better fertility and shade or partial shade. Morning and evening sun is OK, but avoid direct afternoon sunlight. Plant with the top of the root ball even with ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal; provide water if the foliage wilts during the growing season. Feed in spring with organic plant food. Remove flowering stalks after bloom.
