Description
Touted to have the truest blue flowers of any and all Buddleia, the True Blue Butterfly Bush wows with abundant 6 to 8-inch long flower wands from early summer all the way to frost! Like other butterfly bushes, the nectar-rich flowers are sweetly scented and will have the butterflies and hummingbirds flocking. The flowers stand out remarkably well against silvery gray-green foliage on a rounded bush with arching stems reaching 4 to 6 feet tall and equally wide. Excellent for garden beds and containers and especially nice near patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where the flowers and butterflies feeding can be enjoyed from close up.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 6 feet tall and wide, the True Blue Butterfly Bush is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces, a solo or combined with other sun-loving plants in containers, or grouped or as a hedge in larger landscape and garden spaces. Plant near patios, decks, and other outdoor living spaces where you can enjoy the flowers and the butterflies and hummingbirds feeding from up close. It is a fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, perennial gardens, blue-theme gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 18 inches apart for solid borders or mass plantings; 42 inches apart or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The True Blue Butterfly Bush is exceptionally easy to grow. It thrives in full to mostly sun and isn't too picky about soil type, provided the soil is well-drained and of average fertility. At least 6 hours of direct sun daily is suggested for best flowering and overall performance. As with so many other plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can cause problems with the roots. Spent flowers can be deadheaded to encourage quicker and heavier rebloom. Pruning is unnecessary, though plants can be cut back to half their height in late winter or early spring.
