Description

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana' is the true dwarf form of the Hinoki Cypress. It's a slow grower that might add 1 to 2 inches in size per year and reach maybe 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide after many years. its smaller stature makes it ideal for use in small or miniature gardens or containers where it's a fine candidate for bonsai. Its handsome dark-green foliage forms twisting, fan-shaped branchlets in dense, tiered layers which adds a unique texture that contrasts nicely with many other types of plants. The leaves have a sweet fragrance when crushed. An adorable diminutive coniferous evergreen for rock and Asian gardens.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing slowly in an irregular mounding to rounded pyramidal form, the True Dwarf Hinoki Cypress is ideal for use as a specimen in small and miniature gardens or in great containers where it is also an excellent subject for bonsai. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, Asian themed gardens, bonsai gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Growing Preferences

The True Dwarf Hinoki Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and part shade. provide some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours. Constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic. Avoid overwatering. Provide only enough water to keep the soil damp to moist. Maintenance is minimal. No pruning required except to remove a stray branch branchlet that is spoiling the shape of the plant. Provide a light application of slow release shrub and tree fertilizer in spring.
