Pinus strobus "Contorta' / 'Torulosa'

Other Names:  Torulosa Eastern White Pine

Discovered in 1932 growing at Seneca Park in Rochester, New York, Pinus strobus 'Contorta' is a distinctive selection of our native Eastern White Pine with unusual twisted and contorted branches, branchlets and fluffy tufts of needles that curve in every direction. Adding 12 inches or so to its size every year, the Twisted Eastern White Pine forms a pyramid 20 to 30 feet tall and 12 to 16 feet wide at its base over time. Excellent as a specimen or in spaced groupings in sunny landscape and woodland borders or to frame the corners of tall homes and other structures. Also a nice addition to mixed privacy screen plantings. A captivating evergreen that is sure to be a conversation piece!

The Eastern White Pine supports the Imperial Moth and its seeds are a favorite of black bears, rabbits, red squirrels, and many bird species. The canopy serves as a shelter for many birds and small mammals.

Growing 20 to 30 feet tall and 15 feet wide or so at its base, the Twisted Eastern White Pine is ideal for use as a specimen, in spaced groupings or as an unique accent in privacy screen plantings or along sunny to partially shaded woodland borders. Also responds well to an annual candle pruning to form an even more dense specimen that serves well as an outdoor Christmas tree. A fine addition to native plant gardens, conifer gardens and wildlife gardens.
