Description

Pilea peperomioides, commonly called UFO Plant or Chinese Money Plant, is a quirky tropical plant that will bring a smile and be a conversation piece. Unless you live and garden in The Florida Keys, where this plant can be grown year-round outdoors, you'll want to plant it in a pot that can be kept indoors year-round or outdoors during the warm seasons and brought indoors when temperatures drop below 50 degrees. A quirky-looking plant like no other, it features round, coin- or flying saucer-shaped leaves, hence the common names. Kids love it! Easy to grow, it prefers well-drained, moist soil, preferably a good potting mix, and plenty of indirect light.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 12 to 18 inches tall and wide, The UFO Plant is ideal for growing in containers that can be kept indoors year-round or outdoors during the warm season and brought indoors during the winter.

Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen in a container

Growing Preferences

The UFO Plant is easy to grow. Unless you are in frost-free USDA Zone 11, south Miami to the Florida Keys, the UFO Plant is best grown in a pot, planter, or other container that can be kept indoors as a house plant year-round or outdoors during the warm season and moved indoors during winter. Plant in a pot with a drainage hole(s) at the bottom filled with a quality bagged potting MIX, not a potting SOIL. You want the soil to be a light, peat-based media. To prevent the drainage holes from becoming clogged with roots and/or soil media, it's a good idea to line the pot's interior with a porous fabric such as a landscape weed barrier. To grow nice and bushy, the plant likes a lot of light. It tends to stretch with more shade. Outdoors on a porch or near a sunny window indoors is best. If the plant starts to get leggy, reposition it where it will get more light. Regarding watering, it's best to allow the soil to dry somewhat between waterings as it does not like constantly soggy soil.
