Description
The graceful, arching stems of Solomon’s Seal add an exotic touch to the shade garden. As its name applies, Polygonatum falcatum 'Variegatum' features green leaves edged with creamy-white. In late spring to early summer white bell flowers dangle from the leaf axils beneath the arching stems, which are excellent for cutting. Blue-black berries follow the flowers. Its charming flowers, arching stems and lush foliage make Solomon's Seal a favorite in shade gardens and woodland settings where it combines well with ferns, hosta lilies and other shade loving plants of all kinds. Very easy to grow, long-lived and virtually carefree.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and equally as wide, Variegated Solomons Seal is ideal for use as an accent or in groupings in shady landscape and perennial borders. Also suitable for growing in pots, planters and other containers. It looks really nice around garden ponds, edges of creeks and streams or around other bodies of water. A fine addition to shade and woodland gardens, white theme gardens, container gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 18 to 24 inches apart for groupings; 4 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Solomons Seal is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full shade or part shade. Avoid direct afternoon sun. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water if you see the foliage begin to wilt. Feed in spring and again in early summer with a slow-release flower food or natural or organic plant food.
