Description

An easy-to-grow and super-hardy and beautiful North American native flowering perennial, the Walbertson's Silver Fountain Gaura, commonly called Wandflower, features unique and attractive foliage and flowers. From late spring through early fall a profusion of white blooms with blush-pink spurs above highly variegated green and creamy white foliage that intensifies to green and creamy yellow by summer. The flowers form on thin, tall, arching stems (wands) that sway in the slightest of breezes, giving the plant an airy, loose look and feel. Butterflies, hummingbirds and beneficial pollinators love the flowers. The bright variegated foliage provides interest even when the plant is not in bloom, which is a rare occurrence with such a long bloom season. High heat, cold and drought tolerance, and resistance to deer and rabbits, make Walbertson's Silver Fountain an easy one to grow and enjoy in USDA Zones 5-9.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to about 2 feet tall and equally as wide, Walbertson's Silver Fountain Guara is ideal for planting as an accent in smaller garden spaces, as a solo or mixed with others plants in containers, or in groupings in larger spaces and perennial borders. A fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, white theme gardens, rock gardens, wildflower gardens, cottage gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Growing Preferences

Gaura is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for best overall performance. Established plants have very high drought tolerance. Constantly soggy soil can cause problems with the roots. Deadheading spent flowers spikes is not necessary but may encourage new growth and heavier rebloom.
