Description

Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society, Chamaecyparis nootkatensis 'Pendula', commonly called Weeping Nootka Cypress, is one of the most beautiful and majestic of the weeping conifers. It is a medium to large native evergreen tree with feathery sprays of dark gray-green pendulous foliage that drapes from spreading and upcurved branches. A fast grower adding up to 18 inches in height per year, you can expect 12 to 15 feet in height and 5 to 6 feet wide at 10 years of age and 25 to 35 feet height and 10 to 15 feet wide when all gown up. If you're looking for a dramatical accent year round in the landscape it doesn't get much better than the Weeping Nootka Cypress. It is also excellent in groupings or privacy screen plantings where space allows or to frame the corners of tall homes and other buildings.

Landscape & Garden Uses

The Weeping Nootka Cypress is ideal for use as a focal point specimen or in spaced grouping with plants arranged at least 18 feet apart to avoid overcrowding. Also excellent as an accent tree to frame corners or accentuate an entryway in tall home foundation plantings or in privacy screen plantings. Also suitable for growing in containers and a fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing: 8 to 10 feet apart for privacy screen plantings; 18 feet apart for space between trees

Growing Preferences

The Weeping Nootka Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It has good drought tolerance when established but does not like a constantly wet or soggy soil. It is exceptionally low maintenance, requiring little if any pruning to keep its naturally narrow, pyramidal form. That said, a wandering arm can be removed if desired.
