Description
Bred and developed by the Horticultural Research Institute at Boskoop in Holland, the 'White Ball' Butterfly Bush is a fantastic compact selection forming a dense ball of silvery grey-green foliage that might reach 3 to 4 feet tall and equally as wide at 10 years of age, hence the name. From early to mid summer well into fall, abundant, showy spikes of fragrant white flowers up to 9 inches long are butterfly and hummingbird magnets. The flowers are also excellent for cutting and display in flower arrangements. An excellent accent or grouping sunny garden beds and home foundation plantings and in containers that can be situated around patios, porches, decks and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where the flowers and butterflies and hummingbirds feeding can be enjoyed from close up. You might be happy to know that deer, rabbits and other pests turn their nose up to this floriferous beauty.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and equally as wide, the White Ball Butterfly Bush is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or in groupings or as a colorful hedge in landscape and perennial borders or home foundation plantings. Its smaller stature makes White Ball pe4rfect for growing in containers that can be situated around outdoor sitting and living spaces. A fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, white theme gardens, cut flower gardens, fragrance gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3 feet apart for solid hedges or mass plantings; 7' or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
White Ball Butterfly Bush thrives in full to mostly sun and isn't too picky about soil type, provided the soil is well-drained. Plants are quite drought tolerant when established and deer don't like them. Though pruning is not necessary, deadheading spent flowers will encourage heavier rebloom. We usually cut our butterfly bushes back by 2/3 of their height in late winter to early spring, though doing so is not necessary.
