Description
Bred for vigor, exceptional heat and humidity tolerance, and good looks, the Whitewater Bear's Breeches is a hardy perennial that will bring a bright flare of the tropics to shade gardens in USDA Zones 7a through 10b (Miami, FL). Its large, slug-resistant, deeply lobed dark green variegated leaves are splashed with sparkling white that becomes more prevalent as the plant ages. The plant rapidly forms a lovely mound about 3 feet tall and wide from which rise sturdy pink-tinted flower stems topped with tall spikes of snapdragon-like, creamy white flowers flushed with pink. Preferring life on the shady side, give Whitewater ample room to grow in a spot with full shade to part shade, avoiding direct afternoon sunlight. It contrasts beautifully with Hosta lilies, hardy ferns, Heuchera, and many other shade-loving perennials, shrubs, and trees, and you might also be happy to know that the deer and rabbits turn their noses to this one.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and about 3 feet wide, the Whitewater Bear's Breeches is ideal for a bold and beautiful tropical-looking accent or grouping in shady to partially shaded garden beds. It can also be grown indoors as a houseplant provided given ample light. It is a fine addition to shade and woodland gardens, white or pink theme gardens, Asian gardens, and tropical-look gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Whitewater Bear's Breeches are easy to grow in almost any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and shade or part shade. It is noted for having a much higher tolerance for hot and humid summer weather than A. mollis. It prefers the shade and will practically grow in the dark, so it is perfect for planting under tall decks and large shade trees where not much sun shines. That said, morning and late evening sun are okay; avoid the hot, direct afternoon sun, which can scald the leaves. Plant it with the top of the root ball even with the ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Feed in spring with organic plant food. Remove flowering stalks after bloom. In cold winter areas, plant foliage should be left in place over winter but removed in early spring as new foliage appears.
